home destroyed by fire Dec. 1.

A Golf Course Road home was destroyed by fire on Dec. 1, after a blaze broke out in the area of the home’s chimney.
The structure sustained an estimated $40,000 to $50,000 worth of damage in fire, stated Sparta-Alleghany Fire Chief Terry McGrady.
The three residents of 2837 Golf Course Rd., Brenda and James Cochran and Earl Eldridge, were at home when the fire began about 10:30 a.m.
“The fire began in the flue, located on the outside of the house,” said McGrady. “The fire then spread through the wall.”
Responding to the fire were the Sparta-Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department with three trucks and 15 to 20 members and Piney Creek Volunteers Fire Department assisted with about eight members, according to McGrady. Also responding were the Alleghany Emergency Medical Service and the Alleghany Rescue Squad.
“We were on the scene for about three or three-and-a-half hours,”
McGrady said. “The fire spread quickly due to the high winds.”
