Application deadline extended

The deadline for those seeking assistance from Hurricane Ivan has been extended to Dec. 17.

Business owners, homeowners and renters requesting assistance can call the department’s toll-free number, 1-800-621-FEMA (1-800-621-3362). The hearing and speech impaired are asked to call 1-800-462-7585. The phone lines will be open from 6 a.m. until midnight.

The deadline for loan applications to the U.S. Small Business Administration for disaster-related losses is also Dec. 17.

The SBA makes low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters and and non-farm businesses of all sizes. Loans up to $1.5 million are available to businesses of all sizes and non-profit organizations to repair or replace damaged real estate, machinery, equipment and inventories. Economic injury disaster loans up to $1.5 million are available to small businesses unable to pay bills or meet operating expenses. Interest rates can be as low as 3.187 percent for homeowners and renters and 2.9 percent for businesses. Loans and terms are based on the applicant’s financial condition.

As of the close of business Nov. 11, the organization had received 6,693 assistance applications.
