The holidays are coming faster than anyone can blink an eye and if you can spell that phrase backwards, you have gotten a lesson from the Christmas parade’s grand marshal.
The Rev. Don Richardson, now retired, was chosen as the parade’s grand marshal in recognition for his 50-plus years in the ministry and his celebrity status as “Mr. Spell Backwards.”
The parade is scheduled for Nov. 27 at 11 a.m.
The theme for the parade is “The Spirit of Christmas.” Keeping with that theme, no commercial floats will be featured. Instead, businesses, churches, community groups and organizations are encouraged by the Sparta Revitalization Committee, which is organizing the event, to submit a hand-made entry. The “Best of Parade” entry will win a $25 prize. In addition to the homemade floats, many other yearly standards, such as the local Veterans of Foreign Wars, antique cars, lawnmowers, fire trucks and police cars will be included. “We even have Santa Claus on a fire truck,” said SRC Treasurer Sandy Rost.
Those wanting to participate by performing skits, dances or musical
numbers will be invited to do so at the parade’s end in Trojan Village
Shopping Center. The performances will be held around the gazebo.
Groups interested in singing on the courthouse lawn prior or after the
parade may also register with the SRC.
