After being away from Alleghany County for more than 40 years, Eugene Murphy proves that you can go home again.
Murphy left Alleghany County for Maryland in 1958 and within 10 years, he married Verona Orr of Darlington, Md., started going to church and felt the call to preach.
“I came to know the Lord in 1966,” he said.
After attending Maryland Bible Institute, Murphy continued his studies in California and from there, went to Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. In 1968, he was ordained under Watch Care of Valley Baptist Church in Bel Aire, Md., where he pastored for one year.
“I felt the need, you have to grow with the time,” Murphy said. “I’m not putting a lot of emphasis on education, but it’s necessary in these days. He who’s wise walks with the wise. You can learn a lot of things walking with he who is wise.”
In 1969, Murphy was called to pastor at Wyebrook Baptist in Elverson, Pa.
The church, which started with prayer meetings in a school house,
expanded under his ministry and was his home for the next 31-and-a-half
years.
