As the state reports the continuation of a 13-year downward trend in teen pregnancy rates, Alleghany County reported one of the lowest rates in the state in 2003, according to statistics reported by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
The local Democratic Party recaptured a majority on the board of education and held its ground on the county commission Tuesday with about 76 percent of Alleghany County’s 6,514 registered voters turning out at the polls.

The second annual No Tricks, Just Treats, held last Friday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m., drew more than twice as many participants as last year’s inaugural event in downtown Sparta.
