Local amateur singers, dancers, aspiring comedians and other performers entertained a large crowd at the Sparta Elementary School auditorium on Oct. 16 during the Hillbilly Comedy and Variety Show.

Among them was “The Little Blue Man,” portrayed by Lauren Billings — one of many returning favorites during a long night of entertainment that began at 7 p.m. and ended around 10 p.m.

The event was attended by an estimated 800 to 850 people.

“It was a really good turnout,” Agnes Joines, the event’s director, said about the audience. “I think we had as many as we had last year.” Held in the Sparta School auditorium, the show is a production of the Alleghany Planning Committee, which is a part of the Blue Ridge Opportunities Commission.

Above Left: Oops — Agnes Joines and Mary Higgins share a laugh after Joines missed a step during a line dancing routine with the Jubilee Line Dancers. She later joked that she did that on purpose.
