With an average of more than 100 people per day turning out to vote during early voting and voter registration up this year, the 2004 election is turning out to have more active participation than any in recent memory.
According to Director of Elections Karen K. Fender, One Stop voting began on Oct. 14 and she and other elections workers have been busy handling the volume of voters in the small office. That office is located at 53 West Whitehead St. (N.C. 18) at the intersection with Jones Street.
There are a total of three EasyVote 2000 electronic voting stations set up at the office and many voters have found themselves waiting in line to vote. “It looks more like a polling place on election day than a board of elections office these days,” Fender said with smile. Up through Tuesday at 3:45 p.m., a total of 444 voters had cast ballots in one-stop voters.
“We have been inundated with people coming in to vote,” said Fender.
“This is the best turnout we have ever seen for early voting.”
One Stop voting will end on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m.
