Jayne Phipps-Boger started a new career in August after more than 16 years in the health care field.

She was named the new director of Wilkes Community College’s Alleghany Campus on Aug. 2 after stumbling across an advertisement for the position on the Internet. Phipps-Boger had worked for Alleghany Memorial Hospital for about 16 years, most recently as associate administrator. She still helps out at the hospital part-time as a registered nurse.

“I wasn’t really in the market for a new job, but this one sounded intriguing,” she said. “I felt like, after looking at the job description, that I could take my skills and commitment to the community and my education and make a difference here.”

Alleghany had been sharing a director, Chris Robinson, with Ashe County. Robinson, who has worked in Ashe for seven years, did double duty for about three-and-a-half years. “I didn’t really replace anyone,” Phipps-Boger said. Robinson is still working in Ashe County.

“They just reopened the Alleghany position,” she noted.

The new director said she is looking forward to meeting more people and getting even more involved in the community. “I am excited about the opportunity to be able to serve people on behalf of Wilkes Community College,” she said. “We hope to continue to expand our programs and class offerings.”

She said the college is always open to suggestions on “what we should be doing or what we could do”.
