Attendees of this year’s Hillbilly Comedy and Variety Show will be making long second looks as they sight some impersonators this year at the 14th annual event that will be held at the auditorium of Sparta School on Oct. 16, beginning at 7 p.m.
The director of the show, Agnes Joines, noted that this year’s theme will be one of patriotism, themed, “This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land.”
The sponsor of the show is the Alleghany Planning Committee, which serves as the “supportive arm” of the Blue Ridge Opportunities Commission, according to Joines.
“The fund-raiser will allow two scholarships to be given at graduation to deserving participants who meet our qualifications,” she said. Money raised will also go to children’s programs in the area and to “elderly who need help.”
Last year, the show raised about $4,000. Joines commented that she hopes to make that much again this year, possibly more.
Sonia and Bill Joines will be emceeing the event that is scheduled to range in acts from slapstick to musical.
Highlights include the “Hee Haw Band” starring Charlie Edwards; The American Heritage Dancers and the Alleghany Jubilee Line Dancers; “Ernie’s One-Man Band,” as performed by Ernest Joines on “The Gary Moore Show” in 1961 with dancing Phobie; and Five-pound Opossum, performed by Judy and Foyst Blackburn. Many other preformances, including favorites from prior years and new additions, will also be featured.
Tickets are $5 each and will be available at the door; children under
12 will be admitted free-of-charge.
