Drivers and passengers that travel U.S. 21 South near Sheriff’s Road may be querying about the big silver contraption, otherwise known as a substation, that they see being built.
Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation is building the substation to replace one less than mile away and construction is scheduled to be completed in November.
Upon the completion of the construction, the old substation will be completely removed and the new substation landscaped.
The construction of the substation on U.S. 21 is a part of a series of
transmission line construction projects that will span over several
years. The $40 million cost will be shared through rates by Blue Ridge
Electric members in their service counties of Alleghany, Ashe, Caldwell
and Watagua including a portion of Wilkes, Avery and Alexander
counties. Renee Whitener, the director of corporate communications with
Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation, explained that the costs of
maintaining the system is shared by all members served by the
cooperative because the system is interconnected.
