Those wishing to register to take part in the upcoming presidential election must do so by Oct. 8, according to information provided by the Alleghany County Board of Elections.
Director Karen K. Fender said Monday that anyone not registered by the cutoff date would not be eligible to vote in the election on Nov. 2. Those who need to change their voter registration information also need to do so by the Oct. 8 deadline.
Numerous races are on the ballot in addition to the presidential race between incumbent Republican George W. Bush and challenger Democrat John Kerry.
Local races on the ballot include a crowded field running for county commission and board of education. In the county commission race, candidates are Democrats Gary Mabe and Ken Richardson and Republicans Tom Douglas and incumbent J. Warren Taylor.
In the board of education race, candidates are Republicans Roger Wood
and incumbent Sonia Joines.
