Despite a roof replacement at Alleghany High School, leaks persisted in at least one part of the building as of late last week.
The work on the roof was done by Martin Roofing of Wilkesboro, which is attempting to fix the continuing problems. Specifically, water has been entering the second floor of the high school near the center of the front portion of the building
Superintendent Duane Davis said the problems have been centering around an area where the old roof meets the new roof on the high school. Davis contends that area has been the focus of concern because of improper installation by roofers and that leaks have been mainly noticed during the passing of the remnants of hurricanes Frances and Ivan.
“They have come back a couple of times and plan to come back again soon,” stated Davis on Tuesday.
The school is also the focus of a rumor regarding mold, to which there is no truth, according to Davis and AHS principal Judd Starling.
The roof at Alleghany High School has sustained many weather-related
events since the school was first built in 1967; as the area braced
itself for another hard rain last week.
