Two road construction projects were rated the top priority of the Sparta Town Council and the Alleghany County Commission during a joint meeting held Monday night at the Alleghany Wellness Center.

Alleghany County Schools received recognition as a 2003-2004 Super District for Quality Schools by the executive directors of the commissions on elementary, middle and secondary schools from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

A local icon in blue will no longer be on patrol on the streets of Sparta. Lt. Rex Wyatt worked his last day on Aug. 27 after 23 years on the force, marking the first time that a town officer has ever retired from duty.
Last year, volunteers covered 70 miles of New River waterways cleaning out more than 11 tons of litter, and it was recently announced that this year’s event will be held on Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
