Alleghany Schools among 52 districts in N.C. recognized by SACS

Alleghany County Schools received recognition as a 2003-2004 Super District for Quality Schools by the executive directors of the commissions on elementary, middle and secondary schools from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Rex Wyatt retires after 23 years as town policeman

A local icon in blue will no longer be on patrol on the streets of Sparta. Lt. Rex Wyatt worked his last day on Aug. 27 after 23 years on the force, marking the first time that a town officer has ever retired from duty.

Big Sweep is planned for Sept. 18 on New River

Last year, volunteers covered 70 miles of New River waterways cleaning out more than 11 tons of litter, and it was recently announced that this year’s event will be held on Sept. 18 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.
