Hillsville, Va. woman killed in accident

A 29-year-old Hillsville, Va. woman was killed in a motorcycle accident Sunday night near the intersection of Pulltail Road and the Blue Ridge Parkway.

According to information provided by Acting Chief Ranger John Garrison, Staci B. Wertman and her husband, 31-year-old John Wertman, were traveling north on U.S. 21 behind 48-year-old Jerry M. McMillian of Cana, Va. The two were in a group of motorcycles.

"Mr. McMillian apparently slowed down and Mr. Wertman ran into the rear of (his motorcycle)," Garrison said.

"Mrs. Wertman was ejected from the motorcycle and died as a result of injuries," Garrison added. "I believe that alcohol did have a role in this accident."

Mr. Wertman was airlifted to Wake Forest University Medical Center. As of presstime Tuesday, he was listed in good condition, according to a hospital spokesperson. McMillian was not seriously injured in the collision.

A complete report for the accident was not ready as of presstime.
