With the beginning of the school year fast approaching, Alleghany County Superintendent Duane Davis made a proposal to the town of Sparta during their regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Aug. 3.

Davis, Sparta School Principal Susan Murphy and Assistant Principal John Farrelly approached the council for assistance in one facet of the Sparta School space problem.

"We have a need for space," Murphy explained. "We need to put our after school program somewhere. We are requesting to use the Crouse House from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday."

Farrelly commented the search for more space led them to the Crouse House.

"There is a good setup there," he said. "It would be a boon to the program."

Major John Miller queried if the facilities would be suitable for the 20 to 25 anticipated children.

"It could do for temporary housing," Murphy responded.

Miller further commented the only problem he saw could be on Mondays, when the facility is being utilized.

Farrelly commented that Wilkes Community College has offered some assistance and he and Murphy have considered it as a backup plan.
