Local Republicans and Democrats are being called to the polls again on Tuesday, Aug. 17 for a runoff election.
The state board of elections approved the ballots for the runoff on a county-by-county basis. Ballots for the primary were approved on Wednesday for Alleghany, but not until Friday in Ashe County.
One-stop voting began at the Alleghany Board of Elections office at 53 West Whitehead Street on Aug. 4 and will continue until this Saturday, Aug. 14. The Board of elections office is open daily from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. and will be open Saturday from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The absentee ballot period for requesting ballots for the brief runoff election period ended on Tuesday. Absentee ballots must be returned by mail or in person by 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 16.
All eligible voters may take part in the second primary for their respective party, regardless whether or not they voted in the first primary. Unaffiliated voters may take part in either party's primary if they did not vote on July 20; those who voted in the earlier primary must vote in the same primary for this election.
According to a statement from the board of elections, "New
registrations, address changes and party changes received since the
primary deadline on June 25 will not be effective for the second
primary. Registration books must remain closed before the primary.
