Doors to all four of Alleghany County’s schools will open for more than 1,600 students on Aug. 5. Students in elementary grades through high school will begin classes on that day, while kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students will start at later dates.

The first day of school will be from 8:05 a.m. until noon for first through eighth grade, and from 8 a.m. to noon for the high school students. The following day, Aug. 6, will be a full day, from 8:05 a.m. until 2:40 p.m. for elementary students and 8 a.m. until 2:50 p.m. for high school students.

The biggest change the 450 students at Alleghany High School will experience will be the absence of Principal Barbara Lyon. However, the new principal, Judd Starling, said he is ready to help the students any way he can.

“There will not be any drastic changes made this year,” he said. “I’ve got to see how the school flows with the kids in it. You can’t make a change until you ascertain what you’re dealing with.”

The cost of lunch for high school students will be $1.75. Breakfast, served from 7:40 a.m. until 8 a.m., costs 85 cents.

An instructional fee will be charged to the students. This cost will vary on the classes the students take.
