North Carolina will celebrate its third Sales Tax Holiday beginning Friday, Aug. 6 and ending Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004.
Over the weekend, the purchase of certain items may be made free from sales tax. The purpose of the event was to help parents and students buy school supplies at a reduced cost.
As in past years, retailers are anticipating heavy traffic and highly elevated sales, according to the North Carolina Retail Merchants Association.
The North Carolina General Assembly created the first sales tax holiday in 2002 and since then has been making minor changes to the legislation that governs the three-day “holiday” from sales tax.
One specific change this year will affect the computer software and printer supplies category. Packaged software sold off-the-shelf will be taxed this year, as will be printers and printer supplies.
The exemption for certain items of tangible personal property occurs annually for items sold between 12:01 a.m. on the first Friday in August and 11:59 p.m. the following Sunday.
Items exempted during the holiday are clothing, footwear and school supplies of $100 or less per item; sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item; and computers of $3,500 or less per item.
Clothing accessories, jewelry, cosmetics, protective equipment,
wallets, furniture, items used in a trade or business and rentals are
not covered by the exemption and will be subject to the applicable tax.
