An official election canvass on Tuesday showed a few minor changes to vote totals, but not enough to change any of the races on which voters cast ballots here. After provisional ballots and curbside votes were tallied, totals were increased slightly nearly across the board.

The closest race reported last week, the primary for Alleghany County Commission on the Democrat ticket, only five votes separted Milly Richardson and Gary Mabe for the second slot on the fall ballot in unofficial results. However, after the canvass, Mabe gained two votes and Richardson one in provisional balloting and Mabe and Richardson each gained one vote in curbside balloting. The final tallies for that race were Ken Richardson, 593 votes, Gary Mabe, 411 votes, and Milly Richardson, 405 votes.

Meanwhile, in what may have been the most heated race on the ballot, N.C. Senator Virginia Foxx and Winston-Salem City Councilman Vernon Robinson were the top two vote-getters in the race to fill the 5th District U.S. Congress seat being vacated by Richard Burr. The race was crowded with candidates, including poll favorite Ed Broyhill, Jay Helvey, and Nathan Tabor.

Foxx won in Alleghany, receiving 49 percent of the vote (300 votes). Broyhill, who came in third overall, was second to Foxx here with 25 percent of the vote (154 votes) and Robinson was third with 12 percent, or 76 votes. District-wide, Robinson took 13,775 votes, or 23.6 percent, while Foxx took second with 13,071 votes or 22.4 percent of the vote.

Robinson said Foxx should leave the race. However, Foxx indicated Tuesday that she already has requested a runoff. The date of that runoff has been set for Aug. 17.
