Primary set for Tuesday

Voters from both the Democrat and Republican parties will be able to select the from a broad range of candidates during the July 20 primary election.

State and Federal races on the Democrat ballot include 5th District U.S. Congress, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Commissioner of Agriculture, Secretary of State, Court of Appeals Judge and Superintendent of Public Instruction.

State and Federal races on the Republican ballot include U.S. Senate, 5th District U.S. Congress, Governor, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, Auditor, Commissioner of Insurance, Commissioner of Labor, Court of Appeals Judge and Superintendent of Public Instruction. Local races in the primary include races for two seats each on the Alleghany County Commission and the Alleghany County Board of Education. Board of Education — In the Republican primary, candidates include Harry Ervine, Sonia Joines and Roger Wood. Those three are competing for two slots on the fall ballot. The two winners will face off against Democrats Faron Atwood and Joel Souther. There is no Democrat primary in that race.

  • Commission — William "Bill" Caudill, Tom Douglas and incumbent J. Warren Taylor will face off for two slots on the fall ballot.
