July 4 events are set

A number of July 4 events are planned in Alleghany County, including the annual parade and fireworks shows and the Lions Club's Horse Show. As for the parade, it is set for Saturday morning, July 3, at 11 a.m.

It will travel its usual route along Main Street, from Sparta Elementary School at the intersection of U.S. 21 and Charles Street to the Charleston Forge Building on Blue Ridge Street.

Cliff Phillips is the grand marshal for this year's event. Meanwhile, Alleghany County's annual fireworks display is set for Sunday, July 4.

The display is slated to be launched from Davis Field, behind Alleghany High School, at nightfall (between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.) A rain date has been set for Monday, July 5.

Horse Show

The 34th-annual Sparta Lions Club Horse Show will be held this Friday and Saturday at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds.

The event will feature high action-events such as barrel racing in senior, youth and open competition, pole bending and an all-out single barrel speed racing. Youth events are also planned.
