Three local ministries are trying to better the lives of local residents this summer by doing tasks from yard work to painting. Laurel Ridge Youth Mission Camp, Solid Rock Building Ministries and Carolina Cross Connection are available to those in need of assistance. Laurel Ridge

The Laurel Ridge Youth Camp held its first session in Alleghany County last week.

One of the seven groups spent a week at the home of Amy Choate of Glade Valley.

During the week, the five teens and two adults from New Philadelphia Moravian and Fries Memorial Moravian Churches in Winston-Salem were kept busy doing duties from cleaning the inside of Choate's home to painting the outside.

"We hosed off the back of the house and scrubbed it with the siding cleaner to make the mold and lichen go away," said Emily Johnson.

"Tomorrow, we are planning on scraping the paint off the side of the house and repainting it," Corinne Serfass said on Monday. Austin Holloway and Miriam Guthrie said they were participating in the mission camp to help those who need assistance with various tasks.
