Economy continues to grow

The economy continues to grow in western North Carolina, up .4 percent in April, according to the Western North Carolina Economic Index and report compiled at Appalachian State University.

Independence man seriously injured in wreck on N.C. 18

A 78-year-old Independence, Va. man remained in serious condition at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center on Tuesday.

Fireworks planned July 4

Alleghany County's annual fireworks display is planned for Sunday, July 4. The display is slated to be launched from Davis Field, behind Alleghany High School, at night fall (between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.) A rain date has been planned for Monday, July 5. The show will be put on Hale Artificier Fireworks Inc. of Lexington. The show is jointly financed by the town and county.

NAPCO to expand, 30 new jobs planned

NAPCO Inc. and Alleghany County signed an incentive agreement on Monday that gives the company about $37,600 in incentives over the next five years for increasing investment and creating about 30 jobs.

Phillips is named parade marshal

Cliff Phillips has been chosen as the Grand Marshall for Sparta's July Fourth Parade, which will travel along Main Street on Saturday, July 3 at 11 a.m.
