Detective Ricky Lyall of the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department is on administrative leave without pay while an inquiry is ongoing by the State Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. No details on the investigation itself were revealed in a news release sent out jointly by the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department and the SBI on Monday just before 6 p.m.

"This release is being issued by the Alleghany County Sheriff's Office and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation in an effort to curb the misinformation and rumors currently circulating. Normally, comments are not made regarding ongoing investigations, but sometimes exceptions have to be made in the public interest and to prevent the birth of new, even more outrageous rumors.

"Sheriff Mike Caudill became aware of a situation in early April that needed an outside, unbiased investigation. He contacted the Special Agent in Charge of the Hickory Office (David Call) of the SBI and made a formal request for an investigation. The SBI, in conjunction with the FBI, began an investigation almost immediately. That investigation continues at this time.

"As a result of their investigation, one officer has been placed on administrative leave without pay since April 23, 2004, pending the outcome of their inquiry.

"Sheriff Caudill states that as soon as their investigation is concluded, there will be a complete press release with full details of the investigation available to the people of Alleghany County."

Lyall's name was not originally released by the Alleghany Sheriff's Department, but was released after it specifically was requested by The Alleghany News under public information laws. N.C. General Statutes require county departments to release, upon request, the name of any employee whose status has changed for any reason.
