A World War II Memorial dedication ceremony will be held at Bruce Wayne Osborne Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7034 on Saturday, May 29, beginning at 2 p.m.
The service is slated to correlate with a national service that is being held in Washington, D.C., said Post Commander Eldon Edwards. "On Saturday, they are having a dedication in Washington. The reason we are doing one this year is I thought it would be a good gesture to recognize the veterans in the area while they are honoring those in Washington," said Edwards.
The ceremony is one of hundreds that will be held this weekend by VFW and Ladies Auxiliary VFW members nationwide.
"This memorial will honor the 16 million who served in the armed forces of the U.S. during World War II, the more than 400,000 who died, and the millions who supported the war," Edwards said. "This dedication is one way to show our spirit and commitment to those who served."
The event will feature local speakers and a three-minute moment of silence to honor those who lost their lives. The event is free and open to the public.
About 50 World War II veterans currently reside in Alleghany County, Edwards estimated.
On Sunday, the post will be participating its annual Memorial Day
ceremony at the monument on the front lawn of the Alleghany County
Courthouse. That ceremony will begin at 1 p.m.
