The Sparta Town Council is eyeing a plan to increase water rates as part of its fiscal year 2004-2005 budget.

The preliminary budget figures show an increase to water rates of about 14 percent. "It looks like it is going to be necessary to raise our water rates," said Town Manager Bryan Edwards at the meeting, noting that it has been about 10 years since the town increased rates.

"We've talked about that a time or two," said Mayor John Miller. "We're required to operate the utility fund on a break-even basis," Edwards noted.
