In what appears to be an otherwise ordinary budget year, the county commission has agreed by consensus to look at budgeting for building needs.
The move will likely cause an increase in property taxes. Although that
facet of the plan was not discussed at Monday's meeting, County Manager
Don Adams said the commissioners would need to increase revenues to offset
any additional expenditures. Adams has not presented his budget proposal
to the commissioners, noting that he is waiting for numbers from the
school board. He presented a sheet to the commissioners listing other
budget requests from departments in April. Since allocations to schools
account for about one-fifth of all county expenditures, the budget picture
is woefully incomplete without those numbers.
