Five fire departments battled a house fire on Oklahoma Road on Thursday, April 29, according to Cherry Lane Fire Chief Kenneth Miles. A log cabin belonging to J.C. Henderson was completely destroyed, Miles said.
Firemen were dispatched around 9:50 a.m. Miles said Henderson had gone to the Traphill Grill for breakfast and learned of the fire there. It was reported by a neighbor who went to the grill to use the telephone to call it in, Miles said.
Sparta and Glade Creek fire departments from Alleghany were called to assist, along with Traphill and Austin fire departments in Wilkes. Miles said the house was fully involved when firemen arrived on the scene.
Water was not easily accessible and that made it difficult to fight the flames, he said.
Wilkes Fire Marshal Kevin Bounds said the fire was thought to have started in the kitchen area. Miles said the cause was undetermined as of Tuesday when he was contacted.
Firemen were on the scene until around 6 p.m. Cherry Lane had 11 firefighters and three trucks.
The home was near the Wilkes County line and Stone Mountain State Park.
"We want to make sure all the fire departments know we appreciate their
help," Miles said.
