Filing for local, statewide and national offices in North Carolina began on Monday, April 26 at noon, according to Karen K. Fender of the Alleghany County Board of Elections.
A primary election has been scheduled for July 20. The main election, including the presidential election, will be Nov. 2.
Local offices up for election this year include two county commission seats, two school board seats, and register of deeds.
The commissioners whose seats will be up for re-election are Republican J. Warren Taylor and Democrat Patrick Woodie.
Seats up for re-election on the board of education are Steve Carpenter and Sonia Joines. Register of Deeds Elizabeth Reeves Roupe is also up for election.
In early filing, Roupe has filed for re-election to her office, as has Taylor. Neither school board candidate had filed for re-election as of presstime Tuesday.
Two political newcomers have filed to challenge for local offices. Democrat Gary Mabe, 50, of New Hope Church Road in Laurel Springs is seeking a seat on the county commission. In addition, 55-year-old
Republican Harry F. Ervine Jr. of Bullhead Road in Sparta has filed to run for board of education.
The voter registration deadline for this year’s primary will be closing on Friday, June 25.
