Food bank moving to new home

The Alleghany County Ministerium, as part of its growing focus on helping people in the community, plans to move and expand the Crisis Food Closet now housed at the Sparta First Baptist Church.

It will become the Solid Rock Food Bank in its new location, said the Rev. Thom Burleson, head of the task force that is leading the transition.

Plans are to open in early June in the building behind the Four Brothers Texaco on U.S. 21.

The ministerium plans to add freezer and refrigerator space, and because the food bank has grown into a community effort, it will be able to tap into larger resources such as the nationwide Second Harvest Food Bank, he said.

Plans are moving along smoothly, but the ministerium now needs a food bank director.

“Finding a director is the last major hurdle we need to overcome to get up and running,” Burleson said.
