Judd Starling, an assistant principal at Piedmont High School in Monroe, will be Alleghany High School’s new principal beginning this summer.

The board of education voted unanimously to hire Starling at its meeting April 15. He will replace Barbara Lyon, who is retiring. Superintendent Duane Davis said Starling is one of four assistant principals at Piedmont, a school of about 1,400 students in Union County. His primary responsibility there has been the freshman curriculum.

“He’s a strong believer in getting freshmen off to a good start. He believes if they get started right they have a high rate of success throughout high school,” he said.

“That’s what his focus is going to be at Alleghany High School,” Davis said. “He really impressed the interview committee.”

The school board approved a contract that begins Starling’s job here on July 1. However, Davis said school officials hope he can begin work sometime in June.

Starling was at Alleghany High School on Monday to meet the staff.
