Democrats to caucus; primaries are July 20

The latest round of redistricting in North Carolina will have several effects on voters in Alleghany County and across the state this election season.

It makes Alleghany part of the 30th Senate district instead of the 45th district.

Because legal issues have delayed redistricting, the N.C. primary won't be held until July 20. Primaries are normally held in May.

And because of the late primary, North Carolina will have a caucus instead of a primary for the Democrat presidential race.

Candidates may file beginning at noon on April 26 for upcoming elections, said Karen Fender, Alleghany elections director. Filing remains open until noon on May 7.

New Senate District

Under new district lines, Alleghany will be part of the 30th Senate district along with Stokes, Surry and Yadkin. Alleghany is the only mountain county in the new district; the others are foothills counties. No Senate incumbents live in the new district.
