Alternative licensure instituted

The Alleghany Board of Education approved a policy March 3 that will make it easier to hire teachers for subjects in which teachers are scarce — like math.

Alternative entry licensure is now allowed, with the board's approval of a policy reviewed by school board attorney Fred Johnson.

For some time schools have been allowed to hire people who have degrees and careers in fields other than education. They must earn their teaching license while they work.

But previously, those people had to teach in the fields for which they hold a degree or that are relevant to their degree, explained Brenda Sutherland, personnel director.
