Planning is under way to start a Rotary Club in Sparta. The North Wilkesboro Rotary Club is serving as the sponsor and members of that club are helping by contacting prospective members and providing information, said Joe McMillan of Wilkesboro, an Alleghany native who has been a member of the North Wilkesboro club since it was started in 1965.
Meetings have been held in Sparta to organize and initiate the effort and organizers are on track to get the required minimum of 20 charter members for a charter meeting at a date to be set soon.
"Sparta is one of the only towns of its size without a Rotary Club. We feel having a Rotary club would be of benefit to Sparta and Alleghany County," McMillan commented.
"We want a membership that is as diverse as possible to represent the
different industries, various types of jobs and other areas of life in
Alleghany."
