The 37th annual Heart Fund Auction will be broadcast live on WCOK 1060 AM the next two Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The auction may also be heard on Alleghany Cablevision Channel 8, which will have an audio broadcast. The auction is hosted annually by the radio station and is organized by a number of local volunteers. The unofficial leader of the group is Virginia Setzer, who has been working with the event since its inception.
"Heart and cardiovascular disease remain America's number one killer," said Cornelia Reeves. "Many of the modern techniques in the fight against heart disease, such as angioplasty, have been developed with the assistance of medical research funded by the American Heart Association."
Several of the items that will be listed in the auction are now on display in the windows of the former Bobby's Gun and Pawn location, on Main Street just north of the Alleghany County Courthouse.
As an added attraction this year, the former pawn shop location will be open on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. until the auction concludes.
The shop's windows feature sundry items, including a list of homemade baked goods, paintings, furniture items, pottery, quilts and collectibles.
Items of particular interest include furniture by Tom Atwood and John Wayne Edwards, a load of firewood from John Woodruff, and Peg Saunders painting of Grandfather Mountain.
All funds raised by the Alleghany Heart Association go directly to the American Heart Association.
Setzer encourages everyone to listen to the auction on radio or
television and to participate. Anyone interested in donating items or
wanting more information may call WCOK at 372-8231, Setzer at 372-8495,
Reeves at 372-8369 or Ed and Marion Adams at 372-5519.
