After almost 12 years of serving Alleghany High School, and 32 years of serving the Alleghany County schools, Barbara Lyon will retire from the post of AHS' principal at the end of this school year.
Lyon's retirement was one of the personnel changes that was announced at the Feb. 4 meeting of the Alleghany County Board of Education. Prior to her being appointed principal of AHS by the county school board in June 2002, she served as the school's assistant principal for 10 years prior, and following the departure of former principal Jeff Peal, whose resignation became effective at the end of the 2001-02 school year, she was named principal of AHS — first on an interim basis, and later permanent.
She also taught science and health, fourth grade and eighth grade at
Glade Creek Elementary School, as well as serving as the school's
assistant principal over a period of 20 years before coming to AHS.
"The bottom line is, she's had 32 years in teaching, and is wanting to
retire and try new things," Alleghany County Superintendent of Schools
Duane Davis said of Lyon's retirement from her current post.
