Saturday school possible in county

It's true that school being in session on Saturday is something that does not occur with much frequency.

However, Superintendent Duane Davis of the Alleghany County Schools says Davis said at the Feb. 4 county school board meeting that if more school days are lost due to inclement weather this winter, school on Saturday could be a possibility for the county's schools to make up the lost time.

Davis said that so far this winter, a total of eight school days have been lost due to snowy weather — that total includes three during the month of December, four during the month of January and one so far this month. However, he later amended that statement by acknowledging the fact that students were brought into the county's schools on Dec. 18, 2003, which had originally been slated as an optional teacher workday.

"So we're actually down only seven days now," the superintendent concluded. "If, at this point in time, we lost no more days, we'd get out on May 28."

Following a committee meeting on Feb. 3, Davis was able to come back to the larger board with some recommendations that that committee had made for the school year calendar in light of how to make up the days that have been missed due to inclement weather.

If more days are missed from this point forward (for both teachers and students) during the month of February, school will be in session on Saturdays this month, said Davis. If that indeed occurs, then school will begin at the normal time and get out at 1 p.m. on Feb. 14, 21 and 28. It is also possible that additional make-up days, if needed, will be scheduled later in the spring.
