Based on the recently released second-annual Education First N.C. School Report Card, the Alleghany County public school system has one School of Excellence, two Schools of Distinction, and one School of Progress.
The designations are made based on the percentage of students who score at or above grade level on ABC, or end-of-year, testing.
Piney Creek Elementary School received the designation of School of Excellence, meaning that at least 90 percent of its students scored at or above their respective grade level on testing given at the end of the 2002-03 school year.
Glade Creek and Sparta elementary schools were designated as Schools of
Distinction, having met the criteria of 80 to 90 percent of their
students scoring at or above grade level.
