Six Alleghany County teachers were recognized at the regularly scheduled Alleghany County Board of Education meeting Dec. 3 at the Central Office Conference Room.
Sandra Busic, Terry Edwards, Susie Miller, Yvonne Oliver, Danny Todd and Missey Weaver are among a group of 8,195 elementary and secondary school teachers nationwide who achieved national board certification in 2003, according to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS).
Oliver teaches science at Alleghany High School, while the other five teach at Sparta School. Busic is the academically gifted teacher, Weaver is a reading specialist, Miller teaches third grade and Todd and Edwards teach seventh grade.
"It's no surprise to me that you (the teachers) dedicated yourselves to better yourselves so that you can help your students better themselves," commented Superintendent Duane Davis at the Dec. 3 meeting. "People want their kids to go to schools that have national board certified teachers."
"As a principal I was proud to have as many apply and as many succeed as we did," commented Sparta Principal Susan Murphy. "It took a lot of hard work on the part of these individuals."
"Congratulations and thank you to all of you," added board of education chairman Charles Joines. "This is quite an accomplishment."
Founded 16 years ago, NBPTS is an independent, non-profit, non-partisan
and non-governmental organization dedicated to advancing the quality of
teaching and learning. National Board Certification is the highest
credential in the teaching profession.
