Board hears updates on recent discussions

Last week's Alleghany County Board of Education meeting delivered updates in several areas of prior recent discussion, including vocational education, space and facility needs, and computer technology.

During its Nov. 5 meeting, the board approved amendments to its technology plan as well as revisions to the school system's tech support agreement with the Blue Ridge Business Development Center (BDC).

Technology Coordinator Susan Nilo said the technology plan changes follow state mandates and consultations with N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI) personnel. Those covered changes in 'e-rate' requirements, Nilo explained. The e-rate is a discount plan provided through the federal government for telecommunications services. She said of the updates, "They included things all the way down to cell phone service, so we can apply for the e-rate."

Superintendent Duane Davis said the plan changes are not a major shift. Specifications regarding cell phones were not included previously because they were not considered part of technology in the classroom. The technology plan runs through 2005.

By a separate vote, the board enacted revisions to its contract with the BDC.

The departure of former Technology Coordinator Britt Shaw in July led to some of the changes. Described as a partnership when signed last March, the original agreement called for a sharing of personnel, equipment and other resources between the BDC and Alleghany County Schools (ACS). That included Shaw's expertise in designing networks.
