The first ever downtown No Tricks, Just Treats night was a great success, especially considering the number of participants.

Almost 200 children visited area businesses to ‘trick or treat' for candy, said Leanne Murray, executive director of the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce.

Murray said 2,076 entries were made for a drawing for one of three $25 gift certificates, which were given away as part of the event. Children could register at each participating location, therefore each child could register as many as 18 times if he or she visited every participating business.

Murray noted that the registrations served a dual purpose. Besides entering the youths for the prizes, they also helped serve as a counter for the number of children participating.

The participants saw mixed results with the fewest entries recorded being 61 and the most recorded being 181.

At the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce, a steady stream of children appeared in costume beginning just after 5 p.m., Murray said. By far, the largest groups of children were on the street between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.
