On Halloween night, Oct. 31, 18 local merchants will be keeping their doors open until 7 p.m. for "No Tricks, Just Treats Night."
Businesses will be welcoming children and parents with Halloween treats and opportunities to win prizes. The first-annual event is being organized by the Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce and Sparta Revitalization Committee.
"We designed this event to do two things," said Leanne Murray, director of the chamber. "One is to provide a safe and fun place for children to go trick or treating. There aren’t many neighborhoods for them to walk through in Sparta. The other is to encourage the community to visit our local merchants. This is a great way for folks to find out what people are doing with their businesses." Parents are encouraged to bring their children out in costume between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Each No Tricks, Just Treats participating merchant will have a poster on their front door or window. The poster will list all the businesses children may visit during the event.
Every time a child visits a merchant, they will be able to enter their name into a drawing. The more visits each child makes to participating businesses, the more chances he or she will have to win.
Three prizes will be given away. Each prize is a gift certificate for $25 to be used at a chamber member business. The drawing will be held on Monday, Nov. 3. Winners will be notified by phone.
The merchants are grouped in clusters to make it convenient to visit
several merchants in an area, Murray said. Children under age 12 must
be accompanied by an adult.
