Attorneys began presenting arguments and evidence Tuesday in the Reynolds versus Sawyers and Dickens wrongful-death lawsuit.

Jury selection consumed most of a day, beginning Monday afternoon until a six-man, six-woman jury was impaneled and sworn in late Tuesday morning.

The trial is the main focus of this week's session of Alleghany County Civil Superior Court. Judge Russell G. Walker Jr. is presiding.

The suit involves events the night of April 19, 1998 and early the morning of April 20, 1998. Jackie Dean Reynolds was the driver in a single-vehicle crash near Sparta. He was taken to Alleghany Memorial Hospital, then to the Alleghany County Jail. Reynolds became unconscious following an altercation with law enforcement personnel at the jail. He was returned to AMH, then airlifted to N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. He remained in a coma there and died June 21, 1998.

D.R. Dickens and Michael Sawyers were then employed by the Alleghany County Sheriff's Department, Dickens as a deputy and Sawyers as a jailer.
