Actors, singers, dancers, comedians and others will take the stage this Saturday (Oct. 18) for the 11th annual Hillbilly Comedy and Variety Show.
The presentation, one of Alleghany County's most popular annual events, is slated for 7 p.m. at the Sparta School auditorium. The show is a production of the Alleghany Planning Committee, which is an arm of the Blue Ridge Opportunities Commission.
According to Agnes Joines, chairwoman of the committee and director of the show, the event is a fundraiser for various civic organizations and causes in the area.
That includes providing two scholarships for local students planning to study elementary education or childhood development; books for the lending library at Gap Civil Head Start; and assistance for needy individuals and families, including heating fuel for senior citizens. Acts new to the show this year include "Twinkletoes," a dance act; comedy skits such as "My Bucket's Got a Hole In It" and "Five-Pound ÔPossum;" Marla Shaw singing "Traveling Soldier;" "Shirley Temple and Uncle Mark," a dance/banjo performance; and impersonations of George Jones and Neil Diamond.
Returning favorites include the "Hee Haw Band" (a.k.a. the Rise 'n' Shine Band); the American Heritage Dancers; the Alleghany Jubilee Dancers; and the Golden Stars gospel quartet from Galax.
