A fall lawnmower race planned for last Saturday night was postponed due to inclement weather.
"The rain started at about 4:30 p.m. and we had to call it just before 6 p.m.," said Alleghany Mower Racing Association spokesman Walt Green. "We hated to do it, but we had no choice. We had 72 mowers ready to race — the most we've ever had."
The race has been rescheduled for Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. "We decided to have it a little earlier because we thought it might be a little cool at night by then," Green said.
The race is sponsored by and is a benefit for the Sparta-Alleghany Volunteer Fire Department. All proceeds will benefit the department. A special race, entitled, "Holy Smoke," still will be held the night of the event.
Concessions will be offered at the event by the Sparta Lions Club. Gates open at 11 a.m. and inspections will begin at 1:30 p.m. Practice is slated to begin at 2:30 p.m. and a drivers' meeting will begin at 4 p.m.
A parade lap and the national anthem will precede the start of the
race. Admission is $5 for adults and children eight and under will be
admitted free.
