It depends on how you look at it.
The ABCs performance report, released last week by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction (DPI), contained that kind of mixed bag of results for Alleghany County's public schools.
On the plus side, each of the four schools received a positive performance accolade, led by Piney Creek School, which was a school of excellence for the fourth consecutive year. Sparta School, the local system's largest school, saw a 2.3 percent rise in its performance composite — the percentage of pupils scoring at grade level or better on tests. All four schools met the expected growth standard, and for the first time in recent memory, all three K-8 schools met the high growth mark.
There are some negatives, however. While Sparta's performance composite
rose, those of the other three schools declined. In two of those cases,
the drop was no more than 1 percent. However, Glade Creek School, which
had last year's highest composite among Alleghany County Schools (ACS),
saw that figure drop by four points. That kept Glade Creek from being
named a school of excellence for what would have been the third
straight year.
