In its first year of grant making, the Alleghany County Community Foundation recently announced that it has awarded two grants totaling $1,400.
The Alleghany Arts Council received a grant award of $500 to help promote the new Alleghany Arts Center and The Boy Scouts of America/Alleghany District received $900 to help finance a Cub Scout day camp.
During its June board meeting, the board of the Alleghany County Community Foundation reviewed four grant applications. The four applications were narrowed to two through the process.
Board chairman Kevin Wright said the group had only one problem — they only had $500 to distribute and they needed $1,400 to fulfill the two grant requests.
"Much discussion was given to what to do and how they could help these groups, but after one board member stood up and said they'd give $200 to help make this happen, others followed suit," Wright said. "Before you knew it, the hat was passed to all board members, and the additional $900 was raised right there at the board meeting," said board member Russell Sheets.
The Alleghany County Community Foundation is one of 51 affiliates of
the statewide North Carolina Community Foundation. ACCF is a nonprofit,
publicly-supported philanthropic institution that manages a pool of
charitable funds whose income is used to benefit the community in
grants to nonprofit organizations, educational programs and
scholarships. Some funds are restricted by their donors to specific
purposes or agencies, while others are donor advised and are not part
of this grant cycle. However, together these funds reflect the diverse
charitable interests of the community and enable ACCF to respond to a
wide variety of organizations and programs.
