Judge Russell Walker Jr. last week sentenced a Sparta man to more than four years in prison for a series of break-ins and thefts.

Kevin Lewis Eldridge, 19, of Sparta was charged with nine counts of breaking and entering, 12 counts of larceny, and two counts each of second degree burglary, common law forgery, common law uttering and financial card theft. The grand jury indicted Eldridge on those charges Aug. 11, and he entered no contest pleas shortly afterward during last week's session of Alleghany County Criminal Superior Court.

Eldridge was also scheduled for trial during that session on six misdemeanor charges: three probation violations and three charges of financial card fraud.

With the plea agreement, Judge Walker sentenced Eldridge to two sentences of 13 to 16 months each.

Grand Jury issues 49 indictments

An Alleghany County Grand Jury returned a total of 49 true bills of indictment Aug. 11 during a session of Alleghany County Criminal Superior Court. Judge Russell Walker Jr. was presiding over the session. The indictments included true bills on all 47 cases for which the district attorney's office had asked for indictments, which were listed on the administrative court calendar.

The grand jury also issued indictments on two felony charges not previously announced.
