AngelouEconomics to return to Alleghany County on Aug. 14

Which target industries should Alleghany County pursue in trying to improve its economy and what areas of the country can Alleghany compare itself to?

Those topics will be the focus of AngelouEconomics' next presentation, scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 14, at 9:30 a.m. at the Blue Ridge Business Development Center on the Alleghany Campus of Wilkes Community College, which is located at 115 Atwood Street in Sparta. The public is encouraged to attend the meeting.

The Texas-based consulting firm is working on a comprehensive economic development strategy for an eight-county region and is midway through its study. The counties in the region include Alleghany, Ashe, Davie, Forsyth, Rockingham, Stokes, Surry and Yadkin.

"We will present our recommended target industries for the county and the CEDS region," said Amy Holloway, Angelou vice president. "We'll also present the results of the benchmarking analysis by comparing Alleghany County to the five or six competitor regions identified earlier in the project. This analysis will give county leaders an idea of what has been successful there and how those regions are improving their economies."

The study, funded by the Economic Development Admin-istration (EDA) office of the U.S. Department of Commerce, is a required step for any community seeking federal dollars for infrastructure or other activities that spark job creation.
