Brinegar Days

Ranger Will Foster of the National Park Service (above right) demonstrates use of a shaving horse last Saturday during the 17th annual "Brinegar Days" festival, held last weekend at the Brinegar Cabin on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Foster was using a drawknife to make parts for a straight back chair.

The event, sponsored by the park service, recognizes Caroline and Martin Brinegar and their children, who began building the cabin in 1886. Demonstrations of old-time crafts, cooking and music were included.

In the photo above left, Becky Rose of Laurel Springs makes corn husk dolls, some of which she presented as gifts to festival visitors.
